Every year, 1.3 million people lose their lives to hepatitis. And new data from the World Health Organization shows the number of deaths is rising.
- Hepatitis is now the world’s deadliest virus, after COVID-19.
- There are over two million new cases of hepatitis every year.
- Over 300 million people are living with hepatitis.
- Hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cancer.
- There are only six years left to meet the global goal of eliminating hepatitis by 2030 – but we are moving backwards.
It’s time for action.
We have the tools we need to eliminate hepatitis by 2030 – but progress is still too slow. Resources are not being mobilised; stigma and discrimination are not being addressed; and despite commitments made by governments and institutions, millions are being left behind.
For World Hepatitis Day 2024, WHA, our partners, allies, and our 337 members in 102 countries called for action to end this entirely preventable disease.

What is World Hepatitis Day?
World Hepatitis Day takes places every year on 28 July, bringing the world together to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, its global burden, and to influence real change.
In 2024, we called on people everywhere to take action and help eliminate this entirely preventable disease.
WHD is a day for the world’s hepatitis community to unite and make our voices heard. It’s a day to celebrate the progress we have made and to meet the current challenges. It’s also an opportunity for us to increase awareness and encourage a real political change to jointly facilitate prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
WHD is a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of the importance of knowing your hepatitis status and to spread the word about treatment.
